Bi Focal Lenses

There are many types of eyeglass lenses available today. Some of them are made for special vision conditions. For example, bifocal lenses are beneficial for people who have various vision impairments. At Chapel Hills Vision Clinic in Colorado Springs, CO, our eye doctors provide bifocal lenses and a variety of other optometry services.

What Are Bifocal Lenses?

Two different lens powers are located in a pair of bifocal eyeglasses. This allows you to see things at all distances if you are no longer able to change the focus of your eyes as a result of age. Many people over the age of 40 are more commonly prescribed bifocal lenses, since vision changes occur naturally with age.

All bifocals operate the same way. In the lower part of the lens, a small portion contains all the power that is needed to correct near vision. The remaining lens is best used for seeing things at a distance. There are also several shapes available to help with near vision correction, such as:

  • A round segment
  • A half-moon, which is also known as a straight top, D segment, or flat top
  • A ribbon segment is also known as a narrow rectangular area
  • Executive or E style, which is the full bottom half of a bifocal lens

Benefits of Bifocal Lenses

Bifocals are beneficial in that they give individuals the ability to see distant objects clearly. While they are more commonly prescribed to adults over the age of 40, there are certain cases where they are prescribed to young children as well. This is the case only if they have poor focusing problems.

Bifocals also eliminate the need to have to carry several pairs of glasses. Prior to bifocals being invented, people would typically carry two pairs of glasses, one for viewing objects at a far distance, and one for viewing objects close up. Bifocals make switching from reading to other activities easier.

Bifocal Lenses vs Progressive Lenses

Progressive lenses and bifocal lenses both serve the same purpose, which is to provide comfortable vision for people that need multiple prescriptions. However, it is best to determine what option is best for you based on your lifestyle.

Progressive lenses provide a natural vision for the individual that is transitioning between far and near prescriptions within the lens. Bifocal lenses, on the other hand, are separated into two clear areas of far and near vision prescriptions.
