Cataract FAQs

As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions that compromise our vision. Cataracts are one of these conditions. Cataracts impair your eyesight, making daily activities like driving, reading, and working around the house more difficult. Chapel Hills Vision Clinic in Colorado Springs, CO, answers the most commonly asked questions about this age-related condition.

.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, resulting in blurry vision. This eye condition can take many years to form, so it is quite common with the older population. Removal of cataracts requires surgery.

Why Do Cataracts Form?

There isn't a single reason that causes cataracts to develop. Over time, proteins in the eye’s lens can break down, resulting in cloudiness. Other factors can expiate the formation of cataracts, including:

  • Past eye injuries or trauma
  • Diabetes
  • Exposure to UV light
  • Smoking

Are There Symptoms of Cataracts?

In the beginning stages, cataracts may not have any noticeable symptoms. As they develop, you may experience blurry vision, increased sensitivity to light, double vision, difficulty driving at night, and the constant need to update your eyeglasses prescription.

How Does Our Eye Doctor Diagnose Cataracts?

A comprehensive eye exam is of utmost importance, especially after the age of 60. Specialized eye drops will be used to widen your pupil and look more closely at the eyes. We can then determine if surgery is needed to address cataracts. Our Colorado Springs optometrist will make the best assessment so you can see clearly again.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataracts are treated depending on how severely they compromise your vision. In the early stages, we recommended close monitoring from our eye doctor. We may also change your prescription. Should cataracts develop to a level that makes daily living difficult, we will refer you to an eye surgeon. While it may sound intimidating, cataract surgery is a relatively simple procedure. You will only feel temporary discomfort following cataract surgery.
