Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that harm the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for relaying visual information to the brain. When left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent blind spots or even complete blindness. It is usually caused by elevated intraocular pressure in the eye from fluid buildup. Initially, glaucoma does not have any noticeable symptoms and can only be detected with a thorough eye exam. While it cannot be cured, glaucoma can be managed with early diagnosis and treatment including glaucoma surgery. If you live in or around Colorado Springs, contact our optometrists at Chapel Hills Vision Clinic to schedule an eye exam.

The Symptoms of Glaucoma

The type of glaucoma you have determines the type of symptoms that you will experience. Usually, there are no symptoms in the early stages. However, when your glaucoma worsens, you may experience:

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye pain
  • Tired or bloodshot eyes

Diagnosing Glaucoma

During your appointment at Chapel Hills Vision Clinic, we will perform different tests to diagnose the condition. The optometrist places eye drops into the eyes to anesthetize them. Once they are numb, we perform a few tests:

  • Tonometry: This test calculates the pressure inside the eye
  • Pachymetry: This measures the thickness of the cornea
  • Gonioscopy: This test looks at the size of the angle between the iris and cornea

Treatment for Glaucoma

Early diagnosis allows us to use less invasive treatments for glaucoma. Depending on your case, we may recommend a trabeculoplasty (both laser and traditional surgery) to promote drainage in your eyes. During the glaucoma surgery, we will create a small hole in the sclera to drain the fluid and to lower your intraocular pressure.

The new opening will be made at the iris in the upper part of the eye behind your eyelid. Prescription eye drops and a topical anesthetic can also be prescribed to help control the inflammation and reduce discomfort. Follow-up appointments are necessary to closely monitor your healing.
