If you have received an eye exam, you may be familiar with the puff exam. This test measures the pressure in the eye. However, it is possible to get a puff-less eye exam at Chapel Hills Vision Clinic in Colorado Springs, CO.

Why Do Eye Doctors Use the Air Puff Test?

The eye puff test is traditionally used to gauge the pressure inside the eyes to determine if you have glaucoma or are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma. While the air puff test is not always the best way to measure eye pressure, it is the easiest way to test the pressure in children. Let’s take a look at some of the other tests we use during an eye exam.

Tonometry

Tonometry measures pressure in the eye by applying a tiny bit of pressure to the eye. This test will allow the eye doctor to look at your optic nerve to see if there is any damage. These visual eye exams are not painful and only take seconds to complete.

Ophthalmoscopy

This test provides a look at the color and shape of your optic nerve. This tool has a light at the end that magnifies the optic nerve so the optometrist detects the pressure in your eyes.

Perimetry

Using this test, the eye doctor can look at your complete visual field. The doctor uses a light that you need to follow with your eyes to measure your peripheral vision.

Gonioscopy

This test looks at the engagement between the cornea and the iris. The eye doctor holds up a contact lens over your eye to observe the angle.

Pachymetry

This test is used to measure the thickness of the cornea with a probe placed on the eye. Just checking your eye pressure is not enough to determine if you have glaucoma. Eye doctors also look at your peripheral vision and examine the optic nerve for damage. This is where our other tests come in.
